Someone told me at one point that, because a jet's actual conversion of power to motion is less effecient than a prop, that they are rated this way to allow a fair comparison for consumers comparing a jet to a prop drive on equally sized boats.

Could have been a BS explaination though. I'm far from an expert on the supject and I'm sure I'll be corrected shortly on something. Hp is hp, but it can be measured in different ways. So, you have to be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Posted: Apr 18, am Post subject:. There are several ways to rate HP. Shaft, prop, or effective. The previous poster is correct that jet drives are inefficient. The "jet hp" rating is a way to explain this. Older engines were rated at the shaft. Newer motors are rated at the prop. This takes into account the effect of the running gear. Finally, the prop has a lot to do with it. The best motor will run poorly with a crappy prop.

By that I mean it can be a new SS high dollar prop, just poorly selected for the boat. The same goes for a jet's impeller - which essentially is a prop within a tube. Essentially, it takes a lot more hp to make a jet go fast than a prop with our hp ranges in consumer level boats.

I won't disagree with much that's been said here, but definitely keep in mind how much weight is being moved by those 90 horses. Also, once you're up, with the jetski hold a line as well as a boat?
