What is the difference between sodium metabisulfite and potassium metabisulfite
This is the standard dose. In a gallon of water, add 2 teaspoons of potassium metabisulfite and 1 tablespoon of citric acid. Use it as a rinse. You can reuse the rinse until you notice it losing its odor.
Potassium metabisulfite is used as an antioxidant in beer. May be used at modest levels 10ppm free SO2 to provide protection from headspace oxygen. Dissolve potassium metabisulfite in cold water and add directly. The first racking should occur shortly after pressing the wine. If it is a red wine , pressing will usually be after the primary fermentation is complete. The common chemical sterilant used is sodium metabisulfite because it has higher sulfur dioxide content than potassium metabisulfite.
Sodium metabisulfite used for dechlorination should be fed down stream of all pretreatment unit operations. Your email address will not be published. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. We normally de-gas at the same time as we add the final ingredients.
It just makes the process easier; however, there is no magic here, so you can wait to de-gas, if you choose. Im not talking abotu the stuff in the video, the stuff i have is a similar container but its dark. Hi you mentioned, in this video that hydrogen peroxide removes sulfates.
Do you have a video demonstrating how to do It? As a beer brewer starting into wine making, I wondered if the wine community was using Star San. Thanks for the great video! Any suggestions to cleaning a glas carboy that is about years old, and has spent last 40 years in a barn?
Its 30 liter and full of hey and really tough grass. Asking because you indicated it smells like burnt matches. Am probably going to setup a few traps apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap. Was curious what your preferred method is for dealing with them. Thank you for this great info.
I mixed a half of tsp sodium metabisulfite with 1 tsp citric acid to a quart of water. Hi I have been binge watching so many of your videos these last months because we are on the threshold of our long awaited first harvest of Cab Sauv grapes in S.
My question is if you have ever thought or heard of Bleached sugar Vs. Raw sugar having any effect on the outcome of the wine in relationship to what you speak of today. Thanks Scott. Hi love wine making though I have some challenges getting it right, please can l send mail or or something a little more private. Thank you for good job.
You said to mix one ounce of Star San with one gallon of water. That is incorrect. The directions on the bottle say to mix one ounce with FIVE gallons of water. Be careful when reading and giving out directions. Thanks for the video and all the other info. Of course, I wait for it to dry before the spoon makes contact with my must. But should I worry about it contaminating my wine? Sodium bisulfite is slightly acidic in nature, since it has the ability to donate a proton.
When allowed to react with chlorine bleach aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite , sodium bisulfite forms hazardous fumes. This chemical has several uses in organic chemistry; for example, it reacts with certain cyclic ketones to form sulfonic acids, and in contact with aldehyde groups, it forms bisulfite adduct.
When allowed to react with oxygen, sodium bisulfite oxides to form sodium bisulphate. Image courtesy: commons. Sodium metabisulphite can be used for sanitization, but shouldn't be added as an ingredient. In larger dosages it adds a noticeable bad taste.
By law, the commercial wine industry is not allowed to add it to wine. Thanks JohnT! Joined Jan 7, Messages 82 Reaction score Just to clarify, R all campden tabs sodium or just the Young's brand? Sent from my iPhone using Wine Making.
Campden tablets can be either sodium or potassium, you'd have to check the ingredients list for your manufacturer. I don't think there is much difference between each in terms of preservative powers. I think the difference between na-meta and k-meta is being blown a bit out of proportion. K-meta is preferable but using na-meta instead is not going to have a disastrous effect on your wine unless you're using it in large amounts - then you have other problems! But k-meta isn't exactly expensive so if your not comfortable with using na-meta just go out and buy some more at least you have the option, unlike me!
